What does the Bible say about forgiveness?
The Bible grounds forgiveness less in the offense and more in the pattern set for us — we forgive in the shape we ourselves have been forgiven:
32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
The measure Paul gives is not the size of the wrong but the manner of God’s own forgiveness — kind, tenderhearted, already extended. Forgiveness here is framed as something received first and then passed on, which is why it can be asked of us even when it is hard.
